The team of construction experts from Arc III Construction Corp., a Brooklyn construction management firm offering an array of construction services, explains how high performance windows can be beneficial.
“As the shift toward green building continues to grow, many states, including New York, require that certain energy efficiency standards are met,” says Alex Chiesi, president and founder of Arc III Construction Corp., a full service design, remodeling, and construction firm made up of certified building professionals. “Although it may seem like a drag for anyone who wants to put an addition on their home or build a new one, the long-term benefits of energy efficient construction far outweigh the initial cost, particularly when it comes to high-performance windows.”
According to Chiesi, there are countless ways that installing high-performance windows in a home can result in improved living. The most obvious, he notes, is the reduced cost of both heating and cooling a home.
“Low-E coatings, gas-fills, and increased frame insulation can all significantly reduce winter heat loss and summer heat gain,” says Chiesi. “In addition, by significantly reducing solar heat gain, the cost of cooling equipment can also be significantly reduced.”
According to Chiesi, new glazings with low-solar-gain, low-E coatings not only reduce solar heat gain significantly, they do so with a minimal loss of visible light. He also notes that coatings on glass or plastic films within the window assembly can significantly reduce the ultraviolet (UV) rays that can cause fading of fabrics and furnishings.
“If these benefits aren’t enough, high-performance windows can also increase comfort levels inside of a structure, both in summer and winter,” says Chiesi. “In winter, window temperatures are more moderate and there are fewer cold drafts, while discomfort from the strong summer sunlight is reduced as well.”
