Arc III Construction Corp., a Brooklyn-based construction firm offering high-end renovation services, builds custom spiral staircases for easier living.
According to Alex Chiesi, president and founder of Arc III Construction Corp., a full service design, remodeling, and construction firm that specializes in remodeling jobs throughout the tri-state area, spiral staircases offer the opportunity to better use small spaces.
“Whether planning a remodeling job or new construction, floor space efficiency must be taken into consideration,” says Chiesi. “In small spaces, designers must find a balance between form and function in an effort to achieve attractiveness, simplicity and efficiency. Spiral staircases are a great way to strike that balance.”
Spiral stairs are popular in residential New York City spaces because they take up less floor space, according to Chiesi. They can be designed to fit a variety of interior design styles, he says, without compromising safety.
Chiesi says that one of the most popular spiral staircase styles, particularly in commercial and office spaces, is the double-helix.
“A double-helix configuration refers to two independent spiral stairs that are overlapped to maximize space efficiency,” says Chiesi. “This unique asymmetric design allows one individual to go up one flight of stairs while another individual goes down the other.”
A double-helix spiral staircase design is just one of many custom-built staircases that a designer or homeowner may choose in a remodeling project, according to Chiesei. However, spiral staircases, aren’t just for interior spaces anymore.
“Exterior spiral staircases are becoming increasingly popular,” says Chiesi. “In the case of exterior staircases, the design must factor in the need for the staircase to resist the damaging effects of the weather.”
For this reason, Chiesi says, exterior spiral staircases need a sturdier design than interior spiral staircases and are typically constructed using wood, concrete, stainless steel, wrought iron or aluminum.
“Modern technology has helped us hone our skills and master our trade,” says Chiesi. “This allows our team, and the professionals that we work with, to build and specialize in both traditional and custom-built spiral stairs.”
